ESTEC events

Events&Workshops

FAR encompasses the whole spectrum of flying vehicles for suborbital, orbital and exploration applications, including upper stages, (re)-entry, expendable, and reusable vehicles.

FAR is an event organised by the European Space Agency (ESA) in conjunction with other global space agencies and institutional partners.
The participants are invited to showcase their latest architecture designs, analysis and technical assessments with the aim of promoting the exchange of ideas and the identification of new trends and required developments. The fields covered are flight vehicle engineering, flight physics, aerodynamics, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics engineering and the architecture design and analysis of space transportation and exploration vehicles.
In addition to the latest theoretical advances in those fields, FAR is especially devoted to software tools. Demonstrations and short tutorials are welcome.

A workshop dedicated to EMC engineers where they will seek to improve the means of forecasting possible compatibility issues and validating subsystem designs by creating a collaboration with industry, academia and agencies.

The aerospace industry is under continuous pressure due to an increasing demand for new services and technologies, the higher level of integration of electronics and the need to reduce the overall mass and volume of systems.&nbsp;
New technologies and trends are calling for new approaches and methods to achieve compatibility between an enormous variety of equipment. In the view of the traditional verification approach from equipment to subsystem to system level, the extended use of commercial off-the-shelf components and miniaturization into CubeSats and Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles present new challenges to EMC practitioners.&nbsp;
In order to minimize test efforts, and to avoid fixing or redesigning already integrated systems, EMC engineers are seeking to improve the means of forecasting possible compatibility issues and validating subsystem designs. To achieve these goals, the close collaboration of industry, academia and agencies is required.

The working language will be English.

Introduction&nbsp;
Attracting thousands of scientists and data users, ESA’s Living Planet Symposia are amongst the biggest Earth observation conferences in the world. For decades now Earth observation has played a fundamental role in advancing our understanding of how our planet works and how it is being affected by climate change. While the need to continue to advance our knowledge and monitor global change remains paramount, Earth observation has entered a new era where it is playing a key role in a myriad of everyday applications to improve daily lives and is also becoming increasingly relevant for the competitive business sector.&nbsp;
The event will not only see scientists present their latest findings on Earth’s environment and climate derived from satellite data, but will also focus on Earth observation’s role in building a sustainable future and a resilient society. Participants will also be able to explore how emerging technologies are revolutionising the use of Earth observation and how business and the economy can benefit from this new epoch.&nbsp;

Learn about small satellite design and testing through hands-on exercises on a CubeSat training model,

Learn about small satellite design and testing through hands-on exercises on a CubeSat training model, the ESAT. These lab sessions are supervised by Theia Space and are complemented by technical lectures, delivered by ESA experts. The aim of this Training Week is to allow university students, who are involved in a CubeSat mission or would like to develop one, to get acquainted to the hardware and software of a CubeSat and to the assembly, integration and verifications of a small satellite as well as all the testing require

The “Advanced Space Technologies in Robotics and Automation” (ASTRA) symposium is organized every two years by the Automation and Robotics (A&R) section of the European Space Agency. The symposium brings together the European A&R community and welcomes international participation.

Space Robotic has over the two last years become more topical than ever before.&nbsp;
ASTRA is a forum where the state of the art developments of the European Space Automation and Robotics (A&amp;R) community are presented and discussed.&nbsp;
A unique characteristic of ASTRA is that it brings together the European Agencies Industry and Academia operating in the field of Space Robotics, giving visibility to the whole spectrum of research and development activities in the field.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Participants will have the opportunity to get an up-to-date picture of:
<ul>
<li>Currently envisaged space missions and application scenarios where A&amp;R could play a major role,</li>
<li>The A&amp;R technology needs which can be derived from these application scenarios,</li>
<li>The current status of European and international research and development programmes in the field of space A&amp;R, and</li>
<li>New technology trends for space A&amp;R.</li>
</ul>
ASTRA will mainly provide an overview of technologies/missions which are available or under development in the ESA member states or under international collaborations, but also encourages other international contributions whenever possible.&nbsp;
Private/commerical space appplications of space robotics are announced/happening in ever increasing numbers. This completments the institutional activities of planetary robotics, which have a consolidated line-up of missions progressing towards launch (ExoMars, SFR, European Lunar rover system), and those from orbital robotics that have a high level of activities with developments at EC (PERASPERA in-orbit demo) and ESA (CLEARSPACE-1).

TEC-QQD routinely organises workshops and conferences on dependability and safety.

Several workshops have been conducted in the recent past: AWARE (Advanced Workshop on Assessment of Reliability), FADAT (Failure, Test and Operations Data) and HUDEP (Human Dependability).
All the topics covered by these workshops will in future be addressed by the RAMS Conference, the 1st edition of which will take place in June 2021. The following topics will be addressed:
<ul>
<li>RAMS predictions and modelling (including REX)&nbsp;</li>
<li>RAMS and System Engineering – FDIR, MBSE…&nbsp;</li>
<li>RAMS Challenges with Technology evolutions&nbsp;</li>
<li>A new approach with Small Satellites and Constellations&nbsp;</li>
<li>Human Dependability</li>
</ul>
The conference will address a wide range of fields with respect to RAMS, including deep-space missions, small satellites, constellations, MBSE, COTS, CubeSats, etc.
It will be of interest to industry/academia for R&amp;D activities consistent with the ESA RAMS R&amp;D roadmap, attracting and maintaining attention with respect to the RAMS discipline of internal and external stakeholders. It also fosters cooperation between organizations and partners. Participation is extended to non-space participants to share best practices and lessons learned from other domains.

This course will provide an introduction to ECSS. The focus will be on the importance of using standards and the impact they have on the way space activities are implemented, and how & why standards are used in the different disciplines at ESA.

Standardisation Training Course

The Industry Working Days will discuss the three main future innovations that our technology programmes must address. These will focus on:&nbsp;

<li>Artificial Intelligence</li>
<li>Digitalisation</li>
<li>Quantum Technology&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
The event will be held 22-24 June 2022 at the Grand Hotel, Vienna.
During the event we will work with industry to facilitate industrial partnerships through round tables, to discuss the future of GSTP and to hear some of the latest achievements from the programme.
The GSTP Industry Days are open to industry, academia and SME's who would like to share in these discussions, which will focus specifically on space technologies in these fields.&nbsp;

The joint workshop will address the role of satellite communications within future integrated 6G networks.

The 11th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 17th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop will jointly address the role of satellite communications within future integrated 6G networks.
Building upon the renowned tradition of the two events, this joint conference is an outstanding opportunity for industry and research institutions to get the latest updates and to exchange information about recent advances and emerging technologies for mobile, broadband and broadcast satellite communication systems.
The 2022 conference foresees two separate tracks:
- Track A with stronger focus on theoretical advances with relatively low TRL and requiring full paper submission.
- Track B addressing mainly industrial developments with higher level of technological maturity based on extended abstract submission.

The conference will cover various topics related to the field of materials for space applications, focussing on space environment effects and protection of materials.

Mission duration and material performance requirements are constantly increasing, and understanding the behaviour of materials in the space environment remains a major challenge. Further constraints and new developments in the space industry are driving the selection, testing and approval of space materials. This includes design for demise/Clean Space, obsolescence, reduced mission costs, s-o called New Space and the related use of COTS materials, new lunar and martian surface missions as well as new requirements and regulations.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Traditional topics such as materials for harsh environments, atomic oxygen, radiation and synergistic effects, spaceflight experiments, as well as cleanliness and contamination control will also be covered. The conference aims to bring together and foster collaboration amongst international scientists, engineers and industry experts working in this exciting and rapidly changing field.&nbsp;
